8th ROTARY FIUMANKA REGATTA
Rijeka is in mid-June traditionally all about sailing. 18-year old Fiumanka has once again joined together numerous sailors, the media, fellow rotarians, sea and sails enthusiasts from Croatia and abroad. Rotary Club Rijeka has been a partner of Fiumanka and participated in the event for many years.
Several different regattas took place from 7 to 11 of June for everybody’s taste. The main goal of Fiumanka is to bring everyone closer and enable them to sail. It is evident in its motto: “You have a boat and a sail - apply!”; as well as in the fact that the regatta is entirely free of charge. All the applied boats were provided with a berth, whereas crew members were given free T-shirts and a meal with a glass of drink after the regatta had ended. Even though Fiumanka is not so much about sports as it is about promotion, thanks to ideal weather conditions at sea and on shore, the competitive sailors had just as much fun as those who just wished to participate and spend some time with friends.
Apart from Big Fiumanka, which again gathered almost 200 participants at the starting line, other regattas - Port Cup, Press Regatta, Liburnia Regatta and Rotary Regatta - were equally successful; each special in its own way, with a special goal and a story of its own.
We came to the conclusion that sailing is a great platform for socializing, as well as for the promotion of the idea of rotarianism and development of a dialogue with the community. That is why we associated our Rotary regatta with this well-known event, which was organized by our Club with the help of the Fiumanka organizers.
We have gathered for the regatta eighth year in a row around a common humanitarian goal, which has this time been focused on helping the Service Providing Center in the Community “Izvor” from Selce, a town on the island of Cres. There have been several accompanying boats at the starting line, which supervised the participants, as well as eight crews, out of which the boat IND-EKO, which was navigated by our friend Ilija Šmitran’s crew, was the most successful one. The second place went to the Morčić crew led by our friend Vidoje Vujić, whereas friends from RC Zagreb Donji Grad came in third with the wheelman Saša Fegić.
Rotarians from our club and members of the music band LP Rock organized a charity concert on a day prior to the regatta and donated the money awarded with a yearly award by the City of Rijeka in favor of the association Veliko Srce Malom Srcu (Big Heart to Small Heart)
We believe that the programme of the two-day meeting and sailing has met all expectations. You are invited to start planning your trip to Rijeka and become a part of our charity regatta at the 19th Fiumanka!
